Sincere condolences to Bills family and friends on his sudden passing. We all know he was a fantastic athlete but more importantly a super guy.About 10 years ago my older son was playing softball in Dunville ball field and Bill was up watching the game when I went over and started having a chat with him.My younger son was also there with me and we were playing catch but he wanted me to go in and get a bat off his older brother and I said we cant do that.Next thing I see Bill getting out of his car,he opened his trunk and gave him a small bat and his tears soon turned to excitement and happiness. And Bill did not want anything in return. He said you go enjoy that bat little man. That is one story out of the hundreds that was shared amongst his family and friends the last few days. You sure put a smile on my kids face that day Bill as you did hundreds while you were with us.Rest easy BILL.

I am beyond sad. Bill was a friend in high school and university. He was a wonderful co-worker of mine for over 20 years. We worked on our Masters program together as part of a group of 5. He was the one who kept us all motivated and pulled us through with his help and corny sense of humour. To this day my children will say “I have a Mr. Greene joke”… or “ That was a groaner. That’s one for Mr. Greene”. He loved his family dearly and everything he did was for them. He loved sports - except swimming. His last semester of MUN was my first. He would come into the TSC after swimming, eyes all bloodshot and someone would say- How was it today Billy? He would say “Same as yesterday. Alright I spose”. I don’t know if it was his second or third attempt to pass but he finally managed to pass it that term. He had great friends because he was a great friend. He loved his work. He didn’t consider it work though. He was so good to every staff member and student and couldn’t do enough to make your day easier. He treated each and every human with kindness and respect. Sometimes when there would be a student who was difficult he would say “I always look for the good. I know there is a good person in there somewhere”. He was a wonderful human being. Rest In Peace Billy. You will be so missed but so fondly remembered.

To: Geannie, Cyrstal, Allison, and Jeff, and to Billy’s siblings (Liz, Barb, Juanita, Edwina, Wilma and Stephen and their families) and to all of the Greene and Hunt families.
Like many others, we are shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Billy. We offer our most sincere condolences, and we do hope that all of the support, prayers and fond memories provided by family and friends will give you the strength and courage to get through this very difficult time.
I was really touched by the heartfelt postings by Freddie Mills and Terry and Betty O’Keene, which are but two of many stories of the positive impact which Billy had on many peers, students, friends, and family members as a Teacher, Educator, Motivator, Coach, friend, son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and so on. I learned so much from the condolence postings that I never knew about Billy, because he was a humble man who never bragged about all of the good deeds he performed throughout his short but fulfilling life on this earth.
I have known Billy since I could speak and chew food, and I share a special bond with Billy. Billy’s Mom and my Mom were childhood friends from Red Island, and we were born one day apart at Placentia Hospital, along with Danny Flynn of Fox Harbour!! Billy and his siblings exchanged Christmas gifts with my family until we were in our teens.
Billy and I were classmates throughout high school at Laval. What most impressed me about Billy was his composure and calmness under pressure, especially during the provincial final exams in Grade Eleven. He was a high level academic student, who was also very much involved in all extracurricular school activities, especially sports he excelled in like softball, basketball, and ball hockey. He was a joy to be around, with his positive outlook on life and his never say die attitude!! My private nickname for Billy was The Motivator!!
I moved to Ontario after high school, but I always made a point of catching up with Billy whenever I returned back to the Rock for vacation. Billy always provided me and my family with updates on what our former classmates and old friends were doing. Billy always saw the good and potential in others. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. My get-togethers with Billy were uplifting and inspirational!! He never spoke much of his accomplishments, but he always spoke proudly of his family, including when his brother Stephen had gotten this great Computer Programming job in the USA in the early 2000’s!!
Billy had a highlight reel career and life: 40 plus years of teaching, coaching and mentoring, and helping mould students to become valuable members of society; obtaining his Masters Degree; participating in National Championships in Ball Hockey and Softball; raising a magnificent family; and 34 years of blissful marriage with his true love, Geannie.
I last spoke to Billy when he dropped by the Funeral Home in Placentia after my Dad had passed away in 2013. But Billy was always in my thoughts, even as recently as last week, as I wondered how he was doing over the past 9 years.
We all shed two kinds of tears today for Billy: tears of sadness for the sudden, tragic loss of such a great person; and tears of joy that Billy has touched and positively impacted the lives of hundreds and hundreds of persons, and has made them better persons for it. The ripple effect from Billy Greene’s interaction with people from all walks of life has made those communities stronger and has made us better human beings.
Billy Greene was a compassionate, caring, peaceful, humble man who made his mark on life . For in the words of the great reggae singer, Peter Tosh, Billy Greene was a “decent, lawful, upright, honorary citizen”!!
Billy Greene, May you Rest In Peace.
Sincerely, Terry, May and Ian King

Geannie and Family,
Mr. Greene was such a loved man. Eternally positive, helpful, and kind. My Mom and Dad thought very highly of him and so does the rest of our family. He always came over to say hi whenever I visited the my parents/greenhouse and asked about the kids. He would even offer to help carry my bags in. He was a joy to be around. He will be so greatly missed. Sending you all love during this difficult time.

Geannie, Crystal, Jeff, Allison and your entire family
My sincerest condolences on the passing of Bill. Like many, Mr. Greene was very influential in my life. He was a teacher, coach, a mentor and a friend. The memories I have of us together at St. Edward’s gym, ball fields/gyms around the province and in Southeast are some of my most cherished. He was a once in a lifetime teacher and truly impacted the lives of all of his students. The more I reflect on the impact he had on my life the more I realize how central a figure he has been. As mentioned in other posts, conversations about going to school at St. Edwards always revolve around Mr. Greene and his kindness, enthusiasm, and passion.
A few quick memories:
1) Floor Hockey- Our friend group could never seem to beat the adults led by Bill. Mr. Greene was a magician with a hockey stick.
2) After School Sports- To this day I have yet to witness an after school sports program that compares to what Mr. Greene offered his students. To volunteer so much of his time is something I’ll always admire.
3) Mr. Greene and my father being ejected during a softball game in Shea Heights. Those who were there will remember why.
4) Sports Days- Mr. Greene would deliver a memorable day every year for all students. His organization & attention to detail were second to none.
6) School trip to Montreal- The highlight of the trip for me was attending my first Expos game. Mr. Greene, knowing how much this meant to me, snuck away during batting practice and secured a home run ball which he gave to me. To this day the ball is still in my possession and always reminds me of that day.
My decision to pursue a career in Physical Education was largely motivated by the positive experiences/lessons provided to me by Bill. Before starting my first Physical Education position he sat with me for hours discussing curriculum, sharing ideas, resources,
and wisdom. About the only thing we didn’t see eye to eye on was Maple Leafs v Canadiens. I can’t express how many times since that sit down I’ve asked myself “How would Bill teach this?” or “What would Bill do?”.
There are no words for how thankful I am to have known and learned from Bill. Rest easy, Mr. Greene.

Geannie & Family,
Our hearts are saddened by Billy's passing. The news has shattered us all. I had the opportunity to work with Bill in St. Edward's and St. Anne's. He was so respected and loved by all his students and co workers. His kind, thoughtful and caring personality spoke volumes about him.
One day while working in St. Anne's I mentioned on our lunch break that I had a bad headache. When I went after lunch to do my scheduled supervision Billy was already there in my place. He told me to relax and feel better he would cover for me.He wanted no recognition or praise for the many chores he did for his coworkers. Billy had a gift to bring the best out in not only his students but anybody who had the pleasure of his company.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies. R.I.P Our Mr. Greene

We are so saddened to hear of Billy’s passing. He certainly was a quiet, genuine, talented man. I graduated with Bill from Physical Education and he was so helpful throughout; a real team player. I remember how organized and dedicated he was to his teaching. He had lesson plans completed for the entire year for every grade and shared it with me. Wanted nothing but the best for all. Wayne enjoyed playing many sports with Billy. He was a true sportsman and carry that through to his teaching and children.
We both extend our sincere condolences to you all, as we know he will be truly missed by many.

To Geannie and family:
I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Billy's death. It's difficult to add to the tremendous tributes already presented because it seems like everyone felt the same genuine love and respect for this man. Regrettably, people like Billy Greene are far too few in this world. He was an exceptional teacher and person, one of the best I ever encountered. I had the distinct pleasure and privilege to have him on the staff of St. Edwards for six years. I know that the other staff members will agree with me when I say that he was the heart and soul of the school. He was loved by all, from the rowdy senior student to the meekest kindergarten child and he treated each with compassion and respect. When he informed me a few years ago that he was retiring, I said, "Billy, you can't! You have too much to offer! They just don't come along like you." No doubt, he was special!
In your grief, take the time to give thanks for the gift that he was and to cherish the memories. Please accept Janet's and my sincere condolences. God Bless and may he rest in peace.

Our very deepest condolences to Geannie and Family.
May God bless, comfort and strengthen you in these very difficult days.
We are absolutely heartbroken by Billy’s sudden passing!
He was the Humble Angel on earth and we are so very blessed to have had him in our lives.
I had the wonderful pleasure of teaching with Billy for many years. His picture should be placed in a dictionary under the definition of Role Model! He definitely set such outstanding examples for us all to follow. In his daily school planning, Billy always made sure he created a very comfortable learning environment for each and every child. He was always very cautious in designing his lesson plans to ensure all students’ ability levels were challenged. Yes, Billy always had such a sincere interest and true concern for each and every child he came in contact with and they, in return, always showed true respect and trust in him ….he was our Guiding Light!
Next, We were so blessed to have Billy and his beautiful family as our next door neighbour for the past 30 years. His deep love for Geannie, his children and grandchildren was always foremost in his life.
Billy was always so kind, caring, so positive, so reliable, so helpful, so pleasant, so gentle, so honest ...THE VERY BEST. His genuine, beautiful smile will forever stay etched in our minds.
We love you Billy!
Bells are surely ringing in heaven to welcome you, the Humble Angel.

He was so much fun in gym class …. And always so soft spoken and kind. Sports days we would head to the ball field and he would pass out the ribbons at the end. Always so involved in the activities we would do and always was smiling. Years later …..wherever you would see him , he would always speak to me or wave to me. Deepest condolences to the family. Mr. Greene was one of the most sincere, humble and kind person I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. Growing up in southeast, he was always around. Whether it would be in school, coaching our ball team, or a good game of ball hockey next door at Mr. Moores place Bill was always up to it. The memories of st.edwards always go back to a story of Mr.Greene. He wasn’t just a teacher, Bill spent countless hours helping us grow through sports. He instilled so much in the kids of the community and especially while we were there. Quite often between Mr Greene and Mr Mills the gym was opened in the evenings and nights so we could avail to it. And even as the years have gone by I wouldn’t meet Mr.Greene without a lengthy sports conversation and a travel back in time. Bill you were definitely one of the best, such a shock and tragedy to lose a figure like you. You’ll definitely missed by your family but also by your students, which became friends. Rest easy Mr.Greene. Heaven has definitely gained a great man!!

Condolences to the family and friends of Bill Greene. Growing up in Placentia, "Mr. Greene" was such an important part of our lives as kids going through St. Edward's Elementary. He wasn't just a teacher, he was a role model and someone we all looked up to. When asked the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?", my answer for as long as I can remember was always, "a Phys Ed teacher". That was solely because of Bill Greene. He impacted our lives in such positive ways and many of his kind-hearted characteristics were passed on to us through the years. His countless hours volunteering after-school, during lunch and on weekends will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Mr. Greene.

Geannie & Family,
I have known smiling Billy since our teenage years, Laval, MUN, & various schools throughout Placentia. Billy was one of the kindest, patient, friendliest, respectable gentleman I have had the delightful pleasure to meet. I will miss our conversations, his happy hand waves & toots from his truck horn. Billy was indeed a rare gem! Our deepest condolences are sent to the Greene & Hunt Families. Rest in peace my friend.

I had the privilege and pleasure of teaching with Billy in Holy Rosary School, Freshwater. He was an excellent role model for both students and coworkers, and a master teacher of the highest degree. He treated everyone with the utmost respect, kindness and dignity. "Inclusion" was never a new word for Billy, as he left no one out and held everyone in the highest regard. Billy Greene was a special person, a great friend and a wonderful colleague. Jim & I send our sincere sympathy and condolences to Geannie & his family. Words cannot describe the heartbreak I feel for you guys on the loss of a Man who exemplified the true meaning of a gentleman. I used to jokingly call him the "Pied Piper" of Placentia area whenever I would run into him because he always had children surrounding him. A teacher that was loved by all, a softball player who showed sportsmanship all of the time. As the saying goes "only the good die young". Bill Greene this is true in your case. The loss of a Husband/Father/Grandfather/Brother/Uncle/Friend will be felt for a long time. Treasure your precious memories. Rest in peace Bill, you have earned your wings.

Sending my deepest sympathies to Bill’s family and friends. I met Bill many years ago, when he came to Holy Rosary School in Freshwater to teach Phys Ed. You never really forget people when they have an impact on your life. Bill was an exceptional teacher who put his heart and soul into it, that was obvious. I’ll never forget how I was struggling in class, and he believed in me, when I didn’t believe in myself. I’m sure many students could give similar stories to Bill’s encouraging, nurturing, motivating nature. Thinking of you all during this very difficult time. Rest In Peace Mr. Greene

Oh my, it was such a shock to hear of Bill’s sudden passing.
This man was truly one of finest Placentia men known, always with a smile, a kind word, a warm hello.
He was a gentleman to the core.
I’ve known Billy my entire life holding fast to fond memories of him from childhood days, to good old university floor hockey days, to watching and admiring him during his teaching years.
I don’t know of any child, parent or co-worker who didn’t feel concern and caring from this wonderful man.
He was patient and fun to his students. I can remember kids (mine included) who wanted a place to play floor hockey or basketball after school and on the weekends and of course, Bill was there.
He will be sorrowfully missed by many in this community but none more than his beautiful family. To you all, please know how truly saddened I am and that I am thinking about you as you try to navigate through this most difficult time.
Billy, rest easy my dear friend (and cousin).
See you in the gym!
