Grandma,
Coming to NFLD throughout my life was always such a special time. I have the best memories visiting you because it meant we were (mostly) all together. You would always be waiting for us at the door or outside with a big smile on your face. You would always have loaves of fresh bread waiting for us - which never lasted long. I can still smell them. I loved how you always stocked my favourite crackers in your pantry. I loved our walks whether it was on the boardwalk or just to Mary Brown’s. I loved going to Bingo and being amazed how you kept track of mine & Seon’s cards as well as your own. I loved looking at all the photos you kept of your grandkids because you were always sent the best ones. I loved how you used to rock me in your chair before I was bigger than you. I love all the slippers, Christmas ornaments, and dishcloths you knitted for me throughout my life. You were so talented. These memories will stay with me forever.
You were always one of the strongest women I knew - you’ve been on your own for a long time but had so many people around that loved you and checked in on you. You were a wonderful mom to five very special women. My mom shares your kind and giving heart. You were the glue that brought everyone together and I’m so thankful for all the memories we have as a family. You are deeply missed and loved.
Rest in peace, Grandma. I love you.

Grandma,
I have such fond memories visiting you for so many summers growing up. I remember going on walks to the grocery store through the back fields of Placentia that always felt like a worldly adventure to me as a kid. I remember playing in your yard for hours and getting the most fresh air I'd have all year. The boardwalk was a special place for you and I remember being so impressed how often and diligently you walked the lengths of it daily, no matter what the weather threw at you.
I remember trying many new things thanks to you, some I loved (like your fresh baked bread), and some not so much (cod tongues). We all definitely felt the love through your fresh baked bread in the mornings. Another one of your hobbies you excelled at was knitting, and luckily for all of us, you have knit enough dish cloths to last us all of our lifetimes, which is an awesome way to remember you by.
Going to church and bingo with you were always big social events that brought you joy to bring us grandkids around to. In later years when life got busy and I couldn’t visit as much, I started writing to you which to me felt like a fun blast from the past. I looked forward to writing letters to you probably as much as you enjoyed receiving and reading them. Mom would tell me how much you loved getting my letters and how you’d sit and re-read them over and over. Although you couldn’t often write back, knowing that my checking in and hearing about what I was up to brought you so much joy kept me going, and kept me writing.
I’m already feeling that absence knowing you are no longer on the receiving end of my trip to the post office. You have great company up there with Grandpa, whom I never got the pleasure to meet, Carmelita, Vaughan, Anthony, and Jackie.
Miss you and love you Grandma Barry, xoxo Your penpal Ciera <3

Dear Grandma,
Thank you for always having a smile on your face, making me feel so loved and having your warm hugs ready. Your presence and your home was always one of warmth and love. I have so many happy memories of NFLD because of you. Your home was always opened to us, fitting 2 families at a time. I was always so happy to squish in with the family and spend some quality time together.
I will always remember the smell of your pantry. It was always full of food and you always made sure there was something in there that all the grand kids liked to eat when we came to visit. Your freezer was the same. You always had the good stuff in the freezer. I can't say my waist line was happy, after eating all your home made bread, but it was too hard to resist. Fresh baked bread with butter everyday, that was the best.
Bingo! Your game of choice. I really looked forward to that when I visited you in NFLD. Jumping in the car, buying the game cards, bringing the dabbers and eating chips. It was fun when Carmen or I won bingo. The looks we would get from others in the hall. Priceless. You were always so proud to bring the grand kids and show us off at bingo. We all loved the game so much, that if we couldn't go to the hall, we would play at home from the TV.
I am so grateful that we were able to visit last year. Your smile was still the same and I could feel the warmth and love in your room. Kioko was so happy to meet you and couldn't believe that you were 97 years old. She will forever keep the memories she made with you and of course the barbie that you gave to her. She knows exactly which one it is and will always tell me, "mummy that's the barbie that great grandma gave to me." Khang is also so happy that he was able to meet and spend some time with you. I was proud to show them both what a warm and loving person you are.
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I am writing this letter to you. I miss you so much, especially knowing that you will not be there if I go to NFLD again. I know that you are up in heaven playing bingo with Grandpa, Carmelita, Jackie, Vaughn and Anthony. Rest in Peace Grandma.
We love and miss you more than your home baked bread.
Forever in our hearts and memories.
Love from Seon, Khang and Kioko xoxoxo

Geraldine, Deloris, Maureen, Derm and families. So sorry for your loss. I spent many a morning over knocking on your door very early in the morning hoping Jackie was up and ready to go. Sometimes maybe a bit too early. Mrs. Barry would always have cookies and pies readily made. Make no wonder she couldn’t get rid of me. Even as a married woman and mother, she would tell Jackie to ask if I wanted a lemon meringue or cherry pie. Jackie, of course, would say “mom, I don’t need to ask her. I can tell you yes right now.” She knitted me quite a few sweaters and mitts throughout the years. All you needed to say was that you really liked something she had made and before you knew it, Jackie was delivering it. Buying from her was never an option. I know if there’s any such thing as knitting in heaven, she’s sending Jackie out somewhere to get her some wool. My mom and her were great friends and I think my mom missed their telephone chats very much when my mom’s hearing deteriorated. They were neighbours in Point Verde and again at the Cottages in Placentia . I am glad they had that time together. May your mother rest in peace.
