Q: What 3 words best describe Florence and why?
A: To the family my sincere condolences. Florence was a woman that was respected, a strong teacher. Also had her farm with strawberries, ostrich and emu. I spent a summer there. Now the other side of things some kids got put in the corner at school-dunce; and don’t look around, lol. That was the way it was. Our first go at a micrcope was with Florence. One for the whole class. You also needed to know how to spell photosynthesis for field trips. She will be a loving memory for ever. A happy one. So blessed to have known her.

Thinking of you all during this trying time, but can well imagine that Florence’s legacy is being celebrated with great stories of a multifaceted woman in fine style. Personally, she will always be synonymous with science classes, supervision, field trips, and her signature over the shoulder purse that accessorized her dainty presence in the halls of Fatima for many years. In later years we were blessed with her company on both coasts for a plethora of family gatherings and other entrepreneurial adventures where she never missed a beat as host or guest interchangeably. Her humour, wit, and charitable ways will live on through her amazing crowd.

Myself and my Scottish Mom , Frances ( Davis) Cruden visited Florence a few times at Angel’s Cove and always gut a warm and friendly welcome . Mom knew Florence’s parents from when my parents ( my Dad, Bren Davis) would set up a NL Forestry tent at gooseberry cove with my brother & sister( Bren & Kay) & camp for weeks at a time. The generosity ( lots of fresh food items) shown to them was truly lovely! Florence busted a few times at out Ian campsite of my mom Frances , and myself and daughter Meghan T gooseberry Cove in my little 13 foot Boler camper. Florence always had lots of stories to tell ! Interesting and sweet- hearted lady. We got to visit her ostrich and emus too ! Sending deepest sympathy to David and family .

My sincere condolences to the family. For many of us, our first encounter of Mrs. Coffey was when she had us for a student. She was a very good example of a strong, independent, smart, fair and kind professional woman who instilled in us that anything is possible if we wanted to work for it. Her love for her family, community and school was ever present. Once we became adults, Florence always loved to chat and catch up with what was going on in your life and there was a genuine interest, not just making conversation. She was a wonderful lady and has left a lasting impact on so many. May she Rest In Peace and the many memories give her family some comfort in the difficult days to come.

My sincerest sympathy to Florence's family. I had the privilege of working across the corridor from Florence at Fatima Academy. I can still vividly picture her charging down the corridor, full speed ahead, the only speed she knew, with her 'scribblers' of Biology and Science notes flailing. I would often gaze at her chalkboard, admiring and simultaneously envying such perfected cursive writing. One of my most cherished memories of 30 years originates from my first week of teaching in February 1993. I was headed to Florence's homeroom class of 30, 3 girls, 27 boys. She tugged at my arm and whispered, 'when you go in there, don't smile until Easter!' While she giggled as she walked away, I quickly understood the hidden meaning of her advice.
Florence held high expectations of herself which set the foundation of a strong belief in the capability and success of others. Her rigorous determination, assiduous work ethic and her unwavering commitment to education set an example that many novice teachers, including myself, aspired toward.
May her family find comfort in knowing that she deeply impacted the lives of others.
Deepest Condolences,
Michelle Ridgley

To all the family and especially Madonna ,so sorry on the loss of an incredible woman.
Florence lived life holistically combined with her hard work she found time to dance and attended everything socially that she could.
I can't forget her good faith, she always attended Mass in Patrick's Cove ,was an excellent reader and a Eucharistic Minister.
I often came in door from work and Florence would be coming in through another one with armful of beautiful strawberries , telling me of all the other houses that she still had to go to.
So, no doubt an incredibly hard worker and her work was impeccable.
Rest easy dear Florence and may your legacy live on and give everyone strength and hope during this time.

Thinking of you at this sad time and sending heartfelt condolences to you all. Florence’s obituary is beautifully written and a true testament to her years of commitment to service and generosity of spirit. Florence was always eager to help and everyone knew you could depend on her. I will always remember her kindness to my Mom - Eva, and her willingness to provide assistance or take her for a drive at a moment’s notice. I always enjoyed listening to Florence’s stories about Gooseberry and the old Irish recitations and songs. When affected by progressive serious illness, she was fortunate to have her family who were unwavering in their loyalty and love for her well-being and dignity. Florence, thank you for all of your expressions of love in our family, and may you Rest In Peace. And to all the family, I hope your memories of the good times will help to bring comfort and keep her always close in your heart.

David and Family, my sincerest condolonces on your loss. Florence was a wonderful spirit and brought much joy to many. When I die, Give what’s left of me away to children, and old women that wait to die. And if you need to cry, Cry for your brother walking the street beside you, and when you need me, put your arms around anyone and give to them what you need to give to me. I want to leave you something, something better than words or sounds. Look for me In the people I’ve known or loved, and if you cannot give me away, at least let me live in your eyes, and not on your mind. You can love me most By letting hands touch hands by letting bodies touch bodies, and by letting go of children, that need to be free. Love doesn’t die, people do. So, when all that’s left of me is love, Give me away”― Merrit Malloy

David and Family: Rose and I offer our deepest condolences on Florence's passing. The past several years have been a difficult and sad journey for you all but now she is at peace. Our thouights and prayers are with you. For myself it is, once again, a time to stroll down Memory's Lane. As I read her obituary ,I was left with the thought of how one person could pack so much into a short life. But then, given her boundless energy and whip-smart intelligence , it should not come as a surprise. Florence was an integral part of Fatima Central High and Fatima Academy for some 25 years. She loved teaching and working with staff and students. Her philosophy was that every student can suceed - given the proper learning enviroment and with due respect for individual differences and abilities. And to that end she dedicated her efforts. She set high standards and had equally high expectations. Chatting with a former student at a restuarant a few years back - and after his being working away for some 40 years- he was inquiring about teachers from the past and , of course , asked about Florence. "You know" he said " she made you pass whether you wanted to or not". And that was pretty much her!
Florence was great help to us all but particularly to new and beginning teachers . Another fine teacher, the late Melvin Critch , used to say " Once you took the oath of allegiance to Fatima and the Cape Shore, Florence would help in any way she could." Many a young teacher began his/her career avoiding the inevitable pitfalls by folowing her advice.
Not only was she a great teacher but just a great school person. She was part of what ever was on the go - tournaments, graduation preparation, school dances , student travel etc. And all of this with a busy home schedule as well.
Retirement was not part of Florence's life plan. She just saw it as a step toward the next endeavour. She thrived on the challenge of change.
And now her work is done and she is at rest . And of her it can never be said " how dull it is to pause and make an end , to rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use".
May she rest in peace.

Sending our sincere sympathies and condolences to all the members of Florence’s family at this most difficult time. Her journey on this earth has left an incredible mark on all those who shared that journey with her. She gave freely of her time and talent to her family, her students and her Cape Shore community. We have many great memories of her time at Fatima and her service as a member of the Cape Shore Area Development Association. She did not hide her observations or opinions on the important issues of the day. Florence was a contributing and devoted member of any group she was part of. She always gave one hundred percent and many of us benefitted from her involvement.

Uncle David, Liz, Yvette, Rodney, Clyde, Peter, Kevin, Michael and family, sending my love to you all. What a beautiful tribute to honor Aunt Florence.
As a child growing up spent many summers with you all, she never cared about how many more kids were in the house. Many chats around that kitchen table.
Her love of dancing, I can see her now swinging those arms with the biggest smile.
I laughed when you talked about how much she loved to drive. Now ain't that the truth. She never stopped, and she was so good to Nanny Coffey taking her for a drive.
It has been a rough road for you all watching her slip away from that dreadful disease. God Bless Aunt Florence and I know she will always be with you all. Cherish those beautiful memories.
