How has it been six months that you've been gone, Dad? I still think to call you every morning I wake up, every mid-afternoon & after I finish supper. I still hear all the little stories you'd tell me & your laugh rings in my mind. I listen to songs we both loved & watch Lord of the Rings thinking of you. I go for walks in places we liked & sit down to eat in the restaurants where we shared nice meals, wishing you were sitting across from me. A few weeks ago was my birthday, it was so hard not hearing from you & Mom. My first birthday without my parents... it felt surreal, like a horrible nightmare. I did my best to have fun with my friends but there was an underlying sadness because it felt incomplete without birthday wishes from you & Mom. A few days later it was your birthday. I thought about how every year you'd tell me the story of how when I was born I came home from the hospital on your birthday. You'd always say I was the best gift you ever got. Thank you, Daddy, for always being there for me. I know your love & Mom's love were the most beautiful gifts I'll ever receive. I miss you, forever & always. I love you, always & forever.

Nick so sorry to hear about your brother Tom’s passing. My brother Cyril and his wife Liz and I would run into him so often when we would walk down by the waterfront in Placentia. He was a character for sure and had many stories to tell. He certainly was a very knowledgeable man and did he know everything. We always loved to have a chat with him. Condolences to you and his family. May his soul Rest In Peace.

I was very sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. He was my godfather and I remember with fondness his many visits when I was a child living in Edmonton. He often came for dinner and always had a smile on his face and a treat hidden behind his back. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

It was just a couple of summers ago, I was walking on the board walk and stopped for a chat. He said sit for a minute and look and was pointing toward the hills at Pt Verde Light house. He asked me if I saw a dog. I didn’t. Then he pointed out how it looked like a dog, lying on its belly, resting his head. I had never noticed it before. Now every time I see it, I think of Tom. My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

Tom and I knew each other since our days at St. John's College many years ago. He was an intellectual then and remained so all his life. We communicated easily and quickly continued our conversations whenever we met on his walks around Placentia. I dropped by his house a couple of times in the past few months and missed him each time so learning of his passing was more than a shock. I looked forward to and loved his letters to The Telegram and called him on occasion to chat about them. I know he was more than a fine human being and I send my deepest condolences to his daughters in particular and his family and friends generally. May he rest in peace.

Condolences to Nick and to rest of the Careen family;
I known Tom very well at Placentia Library and as well as him walking in Placentia, he always said hi to me and talk to me. Just last year I found out that he known my Uncle Joe Newman and he remember when he died in Long Harbour while he was working.
Tom was full with history and story's and I will miss him at Placentia Library and walking in Placentia.

Our sincere condolences to Tom’s family. How often did we have profound talks with him as he sat on the bench overlooking the ocean, his favorite spot to be. When our grandchildren came in the summer to visit, he’d want to catch up and tell them how much they’d grown. And we’d never leave without hearing a joke or two. And later on in the summer he’d always come back to the bench and sit until the sun went down. We will miss his presence and his conversations. May you rest in peace, Tom. And may you enjoy beautiful heavenly sunsets with your loved ones.

I would like to express my sincere condolences and am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of Tom’s company’ often when out and about with my dog. I enjoyed his unique wit and humour and appreciated his wealth of knowledge. Loved hearing his perspective on ongoing issues in the community, politics, and many things in general. We laughed at our mutual liking of almond milk that his daughter had introduced him to when on one of his visits out West. At one time I had mentioned how difficult it was to get fresh bones for my dog. A week later I found a package of fresh soup bones on my deck with a note that started with Happy Groundhog Day. That was a thoughtful gesture that I will always cherish. Rest in Peace, Tom.

We are so sad to learn that Tom passed away last week.
Tom has been a dear friend for close to 50 years and has always had a special place in our hearts and in our lives.
I met Tom while visiting my then boyfriend's (Gordon Brown) family in Placentia in 1974. We were at the Star Hall
when Tom asked me: Who do you belong to? Being from Edmonton Alberta I had never heard this question before
and was a little taken aback. I abruptly responded: "I don't belong to anyone!" Needless to say he was a bit surprised.
We had many laughs about that over the years.
Tom was our Best Man when we were married and is Godfather to our oldest daughter: Tannis.
He and Tannis corresponded over the years and she too is extremely saddened to learn of his passing.
Tom was always kind and was a very thoughtful friend. He was very loyal and was very family oriented. This is
evidenced by his care and concern for his immediate family and of course his love for Eleanor and Kathleen.
When speaking with him earlier this year he told us about his battle with cancer. We truly believed that he would "beat the odds" and be with us for many more years. Gordon and I are thankful that we were able to visit with him last August.
We are heartbroken that he is gone but will keep him close in our thoughts and in our hearts. Rest in Peace Tom.
We hope that you will rejoice in re uniting with your Mom, Dad, siblings and especially with Johnny.
We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
Love Gordon & Karen Brown
