UNCLE MIKE was a very special man in my life. As he was only 15 years older than me, his oldest niece,I have so many fond memories of this fine man.He was my Mom's youngest sibling (Nellie-the oldest of Mr.Tone's and Mrs Rosie- Anthony English). He always took a very keen interest in all his nieces and nephews and his kindness and generosity to all of us is immeasurable. He was always there to encourage and support all of us in any way that he could. He kept track of each one of us after we grew up and left home right up to his passing.
When I arrived back home in Placentia with my two small children in 1983,both he and Eileen became another set of parents to me,Mark and Janine.Their door was always open to us. They helped me emotionally, physically and spiritually to raise my two children.Their kindness, generosity, and patience knew no boundary where we were concerned. They never expected anything in return ... They both lived their Christian values each day.----They had their own three children at home attending school when I moved back but they included me and my children without hesitation.
Uncle Mike always listened...never one to wave you off after a few minutes. His gentle ways and kind- hearted manner will stay with me always as well as with Mark and Janine.
Over the past 5 years ,especially since Eileen passed away,we became even closer. We kept in touch by telephone mostly and if more than a few weeks went by and he had not heard from me he would call me to check and see that I was doing ok.I shall miss those chats with him.
I know he suffered much in the last 5 years with various medical problems in addition to the Angina that he had for years but he never dwelt on his own health problems. He accepted all the discomfort and pain that he was having ...never losing sight of his Faith. He watched the Televised Mass daily and continued to pray for all that had requested prayers of him.---In the first minute or so in our many telephone
conversations,I would get him to tell me how he was doing then he would continue on more concerned about my health.
Uncle Mikeas ayounger man, worked for many years in Sept Isles (Seven Islands to us Newfoundlanders). He would be home to spend the summer time with Grandda English in his native Community of Branch. I remember his first car (and all others to follow) and how he kept her cleaned and shined ---despite the dirt roads from Branch to Placentia. Grandda,as most of you know, was all for looking after his horses, cows and vegetable gardens...not to mention tending to his hay fields in the Gulch. He had no interest in automobiles in the least and had a little difficulty comprehending Uncle Mike's attachment to cars and quipped on one occasion to my Mom (Uncle Mike was there, too) as how "MIKE pure licks that car!!" Uncle Mike recalled that so many times over the years and a broad grin would come over his face and laugh out loud and repeat what Granda had said.
Uncle Mike, even though a very quiet and humble man, had a great sense of humour. He was easy to please and it was always a pleasure to be in his presence. He always appreciated when someone would call or drop by or was told that someone had been asking for him. He made many generous donations (money, clothes, food, household items etc.) to those he saw in need in his lifetime. This continued when he married Eileen, who had the same kind heart. There are many who benefitted from his lifelong gifts of generosity. ---I shall end with one such story. About a year and a half ago I had a query on facebook asking if 'Mike English' was related to me. After a couple of exchanges it was established that it was my Uncle .She proceeded to tell me how Uncle Mike would make her and her siblings' Christmas'so much brighter when she was a little girl. She told me that her family, like many, were not very well- off. On each Christmas Eve he would arrive at their house with a big bag of goodies for all the children and stayed to vist with her parents, having a drink of Christmas Cheer with her Father. She mentioned the oranges in particular and that she had thought of Uncle Mike often over the years. She went on to say that she had become a teacher and that because of Uncle Mike's kindness and generosity she was always on the lookout for 'children in need.'She carried his sense of justice, and Christian values throughout her career and passed them along to others by her example to them.--I called Uncle Mike the next day and started to tell him about the woman and I didn't get past her first name when he immediately remembered her.He knew that she had become a teacher.I went on to say how much she thought of his caring and kindness and what else she had said about him.He stopped for several moments...and I could hear him swallow the humble lump in his throat. He was so very delighted to hear about her and to know that she had thought about him all these years...not for the Christmas visits but that she genuinely cared and had enquired about him. ---I had a note from her on Friday expressing her condolences to his children and to all the family and that he would forever be in her memory.------
MY UNCLE MIKE will live on not only in his children,Frank,Terry and Gail, his many nieces and nephews but in the multitude of lives that he touched while he was with us here on Earth. HE WAS THE EPITOME OF CHRISTIAN LOVE AND KINDNESS ... AND I AM CERTAIN THE GOOD LORD SAID TO HIM ON FRIDAY MORNING ..."WELCOME MY GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT !"

Frank, Terry, Gail, Maggie, Sandy and little Jack, we were saddened to hear of Uncle Mike's passing yesterday. It is a very difficult time for you and we are thinking about you. Whenever I thought of Uncle Mike over the years, I always smile at what he used to say to me when he was getting a ride to the Moorlands to catch the bus for Port aux Basques. He would tell Mom that I had a very heavy foot!! LOL!! But I would think he was the one with the heavy foot yesterday when on his way to be with your mom! Take Care and think of the happy memories to get you through these sad days ahead. Love, Marian & Randy
