To AuntCecilia's family, I pray that you will all find comfort in each other and your memories. I have many fond memories of her growing up when I would be over with Joan ( which was quite a lot ). We would usually stroll down on Sunday afternoons for a cup of tea and some homemade goodies. She was always friendly and welcoming, while making sure that we were aware that she always knew what we were up to. There was always a laugh or two. Please know that you are all in my prayers. I would like to send my deepest sympathy to all the bereaved family of Mrs. McGrath, particularly to all those I have had the pleasure of meeting and listening to. I feel her loss like a member of my own family. I came to know her when she was my so kindly and welcoming hostess and 'billet' in her lovely house in Patrick's Cove during the Cape Shore module of the Ireland/Newfoundland Festival of the Sea 2009. We hit it off straight away ! I am friendly with, and fond of, many people in Newfoundland but Mrs Cecily was the lady for whom I had the greatest affection. When I spoke, on behalf of the delegation from Ireland, at the closing dinner, in Placentia, of Festival 2006, I said that the greatest riches that we visitors from Ireland took back from that festival and our other visits to the truly Irish parts of Newfoundland, was the reminder and the experience of the true human and Christian values that had been characteristic of Ireland in our childhood and youth but which had come near to being lost in the boom years of the so-called Celtic Tiger. At the time I spoke those words, I had yet to meet Mrs. Cecilia but as soon as I came to know her, I realised that in her own person she exemplified all those traits and true values that I had had in mind in those 2006 remarks. She was simply full of goodness. She will be greatly missed, not least by all the Irish people who came to know her and for whom there was always a welcome on her mat. I last saw her during Festival 2011, when a crowd of us called into her house and our compatriot, Sean Callaghan, serenaded her in her bedroom. Her voice was weak but her spirit strong and lively and she perked up remarkably during our visit. All who called in that evening join me in conveying our condolences but also our own deep sense of loss at her passing. Many people in Newfoundland have retained, in their accents, the strong traces of those of their Irish forbears but I truly believe that Mrs. Cecilia had one of the most pleasant and truly Irish accent of any person I ever met in my 29 visits to the province. It was balm to the heart and the soul to hear her talk. Great credit is due to her daughters and daughters-in-law and to her other carers who looked after her with such devotion and affection. I know that they and all her family and extended family will now miss her terribly. May the sod rest lightly upon this wonderful lady and may the light of Heaven shine upon her. Wally and all her friends in Ireland.

It was truly a pleasure to have shared in the life of your Mom. She was indeed a very strong woman, a lady of poise and character, witty and loved humor, always up for a story or had one to share. The welcome mat was always at her door. I remember one New Years Day as she was taking up dinner she noticed a young fellow walking out the shore. He was on his way home from the ball in Placentia. She dropped everything and ran to the door and shouted at him to come back and join her family for New Years dinner. The scoffs she prepared were always fit for a king and her Sunday evening spread that she put out was fit for a queen. I hold dearly the memory of her walking in the country to the Platform picking berries and how hard she laughed at Aunt Bride who scalded herself with hot tea from the boil-up. She kept me great company driving back and forth to work in Argentia. We got broke down in Big Barasway late one nite and started to walk home. We clung to each other as we headed up Big Barasway Hill in fear to the sounds of the moose trots just up ahead. We were both so glad to see Edmund and Mona O'Keefe that nite. She dearly loved children and was quite contented when they filled her home. There was always a candy stash hidden somewhere as she was always prepared for the little ones popping by. She never forgot anyones birthday and come Christmas time everyone received a gift. A very thoughtful lady indeed. Christmas Eve was one of her busiest nites of the year. She was just like the elf. She had over 15 stockings to fill while trying to stuff a turkey to go in the oven as soon as the last fruit cake came out.The gleam in her eye as she filled each sock would make anyone believe that"SHE" was Santa Claus. She loved all the dogs, Topsail, Hunter, Crisco and of course Prince who had his own beaten path to Nanny's door. There was always treats for them as well. They were the only dogs that I ever knew got served "ice" with their drinking water. The story she shared with me of David bringing home a kitten from across the cove. He was sent straight back with the kitten. Lo and behold the next day when he got home from school there was the same kitten with a red bow on its neck waiting for him. All for the love of a child. She was by far the greatest cook/baker along the Cape Shore. Her famous and delicious bakapple tarts were always made to perfection and with pride and she insisted you have tea when she took those sour milk buns or currant muffins out of the oven. Her flower garden was a masterpiece. Her hard work and dedication always paid off when those big beautiful dahilas came in full bloom every year. Her faith in God and the love for her family go hand in hand and truly showed that a mother's love is a blessing. I will hold close the fond memories we made along the way and I too feel blessed to have known her. There is no doubt that she will float into heaven on the numerous cups of tea she served during her life time 'round her kitchen table. God bless her! May the faith she has enstilled in each one of you give you strength during this sad time. Regards Mary T. Griffiths
