Where do I start - I am so sorry, shocked and grieved to hear of Gerard's death. When I first met Gerard it was an immediate friendship, no formalities. It was clearly evident that Gerard embodied most of the best virtues a human being can possess - sensitive, kind, caring, compassionate. The happiness and love that he brought to friends and co-workers in his short life must surely be the highest achievement any human can attain. His shining light will carry on beaming in our hearts and minds. My prayers and thoughts are with you all. God bless.

I am sending my greatest sympathy to you Mrs. Bruce and your family for your great loss. As Gerard's obituary perfectly stated, "Gerard was a kind and very loving person who genuinely cared about everyone". I didn't know Gerard very well but my mother, Marie, always thought the world of Gerard and had nothing but kindest words to say about him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. I pray for peace for your whole family. Lisa

To Mrs. Bruce and the Bruce family, Please accept my condolences on your loss of your son, father and brother. I first met Gerard onboard the Coast Guard vessel Leonard J. Cowley about 10 years ago. Like everyone you first meet in Newfoundland, Gerard and I quickly figured out a mutual connection and in our case, his brother Mick and my late brother Peter were good friends. Gerard was always easy to talk with and over the years, I always appreciated his cooking. I knew of his various health problems but am shocked with his sudden death. He will be missed. respectfully, Paul Shea Fishery Officer

Dear Mrs. Bruce and family, I was very sad to hear of Gerard's passing. I worked with him briefly on the Cowley some years ago and visited with him after that when I could if our ships were in port at the same time. I found him to be a very genuine, kind person and am sure others felt the same. He will be missed by his fellow workers as well as by his family. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Sincerely yours, Brian Sutton St. John's

To Mrs. Bruce and Family, May God bless you and yours in this extremely difficult time. I pray He gives you all the strength to carry you through. Gerard and I, though separated by many miles managed to stay in contact over the years, and our favorite subject, by far, was our love for the Lord and for family. Whenever I had the opportunity to get home, it was like time was never lost, as we caught up on the all of our friends that we both had during our times going to prayer meetings in Freshwater, our times at Laval and growing up back home. Gerard and Mary are very dear to me and they are now both with the Lord and I know we are all blessed with two very special guardian angels. I could rattle on, but I thank God I was blessed to have been a friend of Gerard's, and I know his spirit of giving, loving and caring will carry on with all of us who were fortunate to have known him. Take care and God bless you all!!!

My sincere condolences to Mrs Bruce and the entire Bruce family at this time of tragic loss. I was stunned when I heard the news, but then comforted by the knowledge that he and Mary are together again. I am sure he is delighted with his cup of tea. Gerard was a very special friend, a wonderful human being, and a gentle soul who blessed everyone he came in touch with. Gerard together with Eugene and Ed, rescued me when I was a very young student in university with nowhere to stay. We have been friends ever since. We shared many meals and good times together as room-mates in St. John's when none of us had very much money. Corn beef hash was a staple. Gerard welcomed one and all, and there was always water in the kettle. His life took a giant leap when he met Mary, and I saw a big part of him slip away when she passed last year. I was glad to have been with him that day as I will always remember what true love looks like. My only hope is that he continues to look over us, as his soul will surely fill the sky. Gerard will always have a very big place in my heart.

One month shy of one year of Gerard's passing, I still think of my best friend and the great freindship he provided. Jane and I will miss him dearly. We know in our hearts he has gone to a better place and his memory will live on. As he said to me many times during his illness, he expects Mary to be waiting for him with a cup of tea and a game of rummy (of course no sandbagging).
