A Tribute to a Wonderful Brother-in-law Celebrating a Life Well-Lived The Newfoundland Poet E.J. Pratt wrote of seagulls, For one carved instant as they flew, their language had no simile. In many respects, the same could be said of John. He was a truly unique individual, and for me a very special brother-in-law and treasured friend. His heart was always overflowing with love: love for Marie, his precious children, his extended family, his friends, his home, his music, assorted furry creatures like Diablo, Casey, and Butterscotch - not to mention any number of project cars. These were the passions of his life. He loved them and he loved life! I do not think I have ever met anyone who had a greater zest for living. John appreciated every moment he had been given and not a second of his life was wasted. He always reminded me of Peter Pan. Life was an adventure: it was fun, it was exciting! If it wasnt, he would make it that way. In some respect, he never grew up, but was constantly surrounded by the magical sense of wonder and fun of youth. Like all of us, grey clouds crept into Johns life and sometimes those of his family and friends. Often he was the rainbow after the storm with his deep caring, delightful sense of humour, keen wit, and warm hugs...he was the pot of gold with a heart of gold gently touching the lives of so many fortunate to have known him by creating a sense of calm, restoring hope, reviving faith, and making people smile. Johns was, to quote a friends phrase, a man worth knowing because of how he lived his life and who he was. Despite his illness in recent months, he continued to display amazing optimism, unfailing enthusiasm for life, and that ever-present sense of humour. On his trip to Newfoundland, days before emergency surgery, he was in Bonavista and climbed down into the Dungeon about two hundred feet below the observation area. When Marie suggested this might not be a good idea, he laughed with a twinkle in his eye and said, I might as well as I might not get the chance again. This was followed days later by acrobatics on a trampoline at Jerrys, and episodes in Bowering Park that saw him climb on a bronze Caribou to have his picture taken, and stand on his head near the Bungalow just because he could. He joked with the ambulance attendants on his several trips to the Health Science, had every nurse who visited his room in the hospital in stitches, and having come out of delicate brain surgery greeted the nurses inquiries about who and where he was with, I am Captain James T. Kirk commanding the Starship Enterprise. He broke into peals of laughter when he realized the nurse thought he was hallucinating. The courage John displayed throughout life and especially these past months are examples for us all of a caring person with extraordinary empathy for others. Even though his illness zapped his energy at times, it never quenched his spirit. It seemed to grow brighter and stronger with each passing day. Sometimes the pain was unrelenting, but he would stoically respond to questions about his health with Im feeling great, or Im having a tiny bit of a headache, or I am a little unsteady today! When faced with many rounds of radiation, he talked about the great mask they had made him. I believe often he responded in this way to comfort others so that they would not worry or be sad. I am sure John had his moments, and many heartaches, but if there was anger, or resentment about what he had to endure, I never saw it. He selflessly put others feelings before his own despite all that he faced. Each day was a gift and he treasured every moment of it. Valiantly, he fought with every fibre of his being to conquer his illness and in some way he succeeded as his spirit and the essence of who he was never wavered. Only days ago he talked of celebrating his double nickle birthday - I believe he truly celebrated a life well-lived and reminded us through his example of the importance of family, friends, faith, and the power of love.. I began this morning with tears as I thought about John and how very much I missed him as sadly for many of the years since he left Newfoundland our families could not be together, but suddenly I felt a great sense of calm and these words came to me. I believe that in some way Johns beautiful spirit was guiding me as I wrote these words. My Spirit Lies Within Your Heart Do not weep for me today For I am near Not far away. My spirit lies within your heart Do not think we are apart. I am here That you must see Living in your memories. When you see a person smile, Think of me for a little while. Remember how I used to grin. Laugh and joke and join right in. Dance and sing and play a song My spirit lives and it is strong. When you see a starry night, And every star is shining bright, Remember the twinkle in my eye. Rejoice for me and do not cry. Love and care, hope and pray. I am here with you each day. Celebrate my life with me. Thank God For all that I could be, And if you feel a gentle touch Its because I love you all, so much. Hug each other, softly smile I am with you all the while. Do not weep for me today For I am near Not far away. My spirit lies within your heart Do not think we are apart. I am here That you must see Living in your memories. - by Linda Doody (2007) Deepest love from Linda,Tom,and Lesley

Marie and family, Lester and Sadie I am so sorry to hear that John has passed away. Oddly enough, when John came to live with us when he was at Memorial he became another brother to me (as well as the other eight) and another son to Mom and Dad. I can always see him coming up the hill across from our house with his shirt open even in a snow storm and Mom would just crack up. She loved him dearly and he loved her back. His spirit and love of life always came through. Please God that spirit and courage will hold you up and be your strength. Jack (Merrymeeting Road)

I wish to offer my deepest sympathy to the family of John Doody. I had occasion to meet John two summers ago when he and his family visited my home in Clarenville. My first impression was that this was a man who truly loved life and lived it to the fullest. His eyes twinkled with laughter as he told jokes and stories about his life experiences. He was sitting at the end of my antique table with elbows planted firmly on the table when we heard a loud, ominous cracking sound. Sure enough, something had broken and the end of the table fell into John's lap. He laughed heartily as he held the table long enough for us to rescue the dishes and utensils. He and his brother, Tom, then crawled under the table to investigate the cause of the collapse. I know that he added this amusing incident to his long list of funny stories which he would share with others to make them laugh. He was a man who knew what life was about and took time to enjoy it. He will be terribly missed by all who knew him, but most especially by his loving family.
