I was so saddened to return home and learn that Betty had passed while I was away. I would have very much wanted to be there to pay my last respects at the wake and to attend the funeral in tribute to a very fine lady. Betty was always so kind to me, so good to the students of Fatima, and such a big supporter of the school. She was a beautiful person and I will always remember her fondly. Please accept my deepest sympathy and my sincere condolences.

Mr Careen and all the family, I was so sad to hear of Betty's passing. I spent many an evening in the take-out after basketball practice, in her company. She was always smiling, never in a bad mood. Even during lunch hour, when the place was on bust, she was as calm as a cucumber. Over the years I have managed to see her at the take out, and she always had time to chat. Your wife, mother, grandma, was an icon of the Cape Shore and will be missed by all. Cherish and share your memories and find comfort in each other. May she soar with the angels.

To the Careen family: It is with heartfelt sympathy that I express my sincere condolences all of you for your loss. I have many fond memories of her from my time as part of the family and later years when stopping by the restaurant. Her spirit lives on in so many. She is with the angels now. RIP Betty!! "A ship sails, and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says She is gone. Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large now as when I last saw her. Her diminished size and total loss from my sight is in me, not in her. And just at that moment, when someone at my side says she is gone, there are others who are watching her coming over the horizon and other voices take up a glad shout - There she comes!" (Bishop Brent) That is what dying is.... An horizon and just the limit of our sight. Lift us up oh Lord, that we may see further!

Richard and family, Please accept my condolences on the passing of your wife and Mother. I remember Betty teaching me in grade 3 and being very comforting for us students. Later in life I would have the opportunity to talk to her at the takeout. She had a strong and efficient work ethic and a good way with people even when we were causing her grief! I'm sure you will all have fond memories of her to last forever. God Bless.

Dearest Richard, Family and Friends; It is with great sadness that I write this note to all of during this very difficult time. I am so sorry for your loss. Betty was devoted in every aspect of her being - everyone gathered around her and gained strength from all her efforts. I practically lived there when I was little and always felt welcome and at home, especially in recent years when visiting. She was a stellar cook, and I can still smell the aroma and taste her homemade bread and molasses! She was a great singer and passed on many lyrics to all of us who were fortunate enough to be entertained by her after a long day in the kitchen. Words cannot express all the wonderful things that she was, and will continue to be, in the hearts of all that knew her. And today I will light an eternal candle for her on this site to show my appreciation for a beautiful and wonderful lady. Rest in Peace, Betty. Your best line to all of us on our way out the door was "Good-bye and God Bless". I wish you the same on your eternal journey. God Bless all of you. My heart is there with you. Love to all. Gailene and Family.

Richard and family, we can not even begin to image how heavy your hearts must be this week. For the past few days you have all been very close to our thoughts. We have shared many stories this weekend, which collectively cover your earlier years in Point Lance when Martin spent endless hours visiting with Ricky (RIP) and Fido, and another twenty four years when I was a semi-permanent fixture at the side of that legendary table.Even though we have not been around for years, the memories are still so vivid. Betty was a wonderful mother, an intelligent teacher, and a master chef.No matter where we travelled over the years, world-wide, hands down Martin would comment that no one could beat Richard's Betty's fish and chips. I remained partial to her cheeseburger and pogo sticks! When we spoke a few years back I told Betty how I marvelled at her ability to work outside the home and keep such a busy household at the same time. I think her greatest attribute was that through it all she never complained; she took everything in stride. No matter what was on the go, she made time to sit back and enjoy a good song or a yarn. May you all find solace in the memories you have shared. When you need a lighter moment, think of the time you returned from your first holiday after being hit by a boat on Trans Canada; the endless evenings of chasing those pigs and hens; the aroma of bread and great meals; every child on the block crammed around the TV in your front room watching sitcoms;treasure it all and know that neither time nor distance can take away the nostalgic wave that your mom's passing has stirred. God Bless.

I would like to pass om my condolences to all the Careen family on the passing of a special lady. Betty was a very kind hearted individual and family & friends meant the most to her and she supported them no matter what.I spent most of my younger years growing up at the Take-Out and at her home and she always treated me like one of her own and that I will always remember and appreciate. The lovely home cooked meals,home-made bread, fish, banana breads and of coarse the game of cards and yarns at the end of the nite.Betty was a very hard worker and worked tirelessly to support her family. With a big family and crowd of boys and me threw in the mix we pushed her to the limit but she always stood by us and found the good in it all.Betty was a wonderful human being and one of kind and for the years I spent at their home she was a second Mom. I haven,t seen her very often over the years but when I ran into her she always had a hug and kiss. You guys got a lot of great memories to fall back on and hold onto and nobdy can take those away.A wonderful person has been taken away but never forgotten. Rest in peace Mrs. Careen. Brian

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Careen family on Betty’s passing. I know how much you all loved your mom; I'm sure her passing is hard to bear. Like many others from the Cape Shore, I spent most of high school at the take-out eating the best burgers I have ever had in my life. I also spent a lot of time at the house with Wanda. The length of your kitchen table always amazed me! I'm sure you all have fond memories of great meals and great conversations shared with each other and your Mom at that very table. May those memories and the support of each other help you through the loss of a very special lady. God Bless
