In September of 1975 I started my teaching career at St. Regis in Fox Harbor. Having no vehicle of my own, I graciously accepted a ride to school on the school bus that had to go to Ship Harbor. The driver, Des Linehan, dropped me off at the school on the way down saying that there " maybe" someone there to let me in. I came to the door to find it locked - it was 7am after all!. Not knowing anyone, I sat on the steps and waited for someone to show up. Very soon I was approached by this kindly looking man who asked if he could help. Once I introduced myself, he invited me to come over to his home for breakfast. For the next hour I was made to feel like a long lost family member. I was filled with food and enough stories and history of Fox Harbor to ease any and all of the fears a first year teacher would have. What a great ambassador for the family, the school and the community! Needless to say the remainder of my stay in St. Regis was a marvelous experience! Even though I have not kept in contact, I have never forgotten this kind, generous and thoughtful man. My prayers and thoughts are with all his family at this difficult time. Charlie Dillon St. Mary's, NL

It has been said that"one man's death affects us all." How true that is, as once again our community has lost one of its valued citizens, Maurice Whiffen. Maurice was employed with St. Regis School for many years when he finished working at Argentia. In both places he was apprecated for his work ethic and pleasing personality. In the community and in his church he was involved in many activites to raise money and give a hand when neeeded. His home was open to friend and stranger for hospitality was an integral part of his character. He helped raise his grandchilden when they lost their father at a very young age. Maurice was always there when he was needed. But he had another side to his character for he loved a good party especially when his trusty accordion was at hand. Who among his fellow workers at St.Regis can forget those Xmas parties and end of year get togethers? Maurice, there are many things we will cherish about you - you will live in our memories for years to come. To his loving wife Ellen, his children and grandchildren I offer my sincerest condolences. God bless you all.
