We have lost such an important presence in our family. Even as we are glad for the end of his suffering, we mourn the absence in our lives. He was a man who welcomed all with a hearty laugh and an offer of brandy! I will cherish the memories of the visits with Uncle Garrett and Bess: the McNultys playing on the stereo; the encouragement to sing a song; and the astute observations on life and politics. I'd like to picture Uncle Garrett somewhere now - holding people's hands in a circle of song. Aunt Marie and Aunt Loretta, he was a fortunate man indeed to have you as his sisters. And we are lucky to have you as our aunts. Uncle Garrett will surely live on in all of us. Beth

We want to extend our deepest condolences on the passing of such a great man. Mr.Gar touched the lives of many people in a very special way. He was a very kind, considerate man and so full of life. I remember how much fun he used to have at the dances in the Star Hall. He would be on the dance floor from start to finish. He would put us young crowd to shame. I remember how the bands would always request "Fiddlers Green" for him. In the last conversation I had with him he talked about the good old days in Red Island. You could hear the excitement in his voice whenever he talked about home. Our thoughts & prayers are with you. Keep his wonderful memories close to your hearts and it will give you the strength to carry on. He will indeed be missed by all. Rest in peace Mr. Gar.

Dear Aunt Marie and Aunt Loretta and Family Dorothy and I send our deepest sympathy and love in the passing of your brother Garrett. Mom named me after uncle Garrett and I will always be proud to carry his name. I had the privilege to meet Uncle Garrett when I was 10 years old, when my brother Alfred and I visited Red Island for a summer vacation. He was very proud to take us for a pleasure in his Longliner and as we motored out the harbour, he pointed out where Aunt Kate Cheeseman's house was, then further out on the point there was Aunt Anne Mulrooney's place and as we passe the beach on our up to the Red Head there was Aunt Theresa's place. To see how he handled that boat, with the waves splashing over the bow, will always remain in my memories of him Uncle Garrett, "LONG MAY YOUR BIG JIB DRAW"

Uncle Garrett, you will be sadly missed by us all. We remember in particular all those great stories of times gone by, the good parties on Boxing Day in Placentia, the home-made soup you offered each time we went to visit and of course how could one forget the words of wisdom you passed on to us as we were growing up and I will always think of you when I hear "Your copper will grow into silver, your silver will grow into gold..." Rest in peace. I'm glad I was able to spend a few moments with you, dear uncle and godfather while home in October. I'm sorry I could not be present at this time to send you off. My thoughts are with you all and my deepest sympathy goes to Aunt Marie and Aunt Loretta who have lost a fine brother. Love Ursula and family

We are saddened by the loss of our family "patriach" - a warm, giving man whose home and heart was always open to us, his extended family. He was a hard worker, who also loved a good time. I remember especially the Boxing Day parties when his legendary homebrew and hospitality drew crowds from all over. I was glad to have spent some time sitting quietly by his bedside and talking with him on my last visit home. Wish I was there with you all to mourn his passing and celebrate his life. My thoughts are with you all at home now.
