Eleanor was very kind to me when we served together on the Provincial Marking Board back in the mid-eighties. She showed me the procedures and helped me every step of the way. I am forever grateful for her mentorship and most of all for her good humour and patience. All young teachers should be as lucky to have an Eleanor in their career. May she rest in eternal peace.

Brian and family, Power family: Its is with profound sadness that Rose and I hear of your Mom and sister's passing. We send our sincere condolences. I had the great good fortune and privilege to have Eleanor as a colleague and friend for over 25 years. It is not with a little nostalgia that I revisit our many years at Fatima High and Fatima Academy. It is an understatement to say that she was fine teacher - she was one of the best- and for a variety of reasons. Eleanor was whip-smart and although her forte was Language and Literature , her abilities traversed the entire curriculum. There were very few subject areas that she would not take on if doing so meant that a student would get that extra course or that difficult schedule block would be filled. Her abilities were well noted at the District Office and she was often approached to take on Curriculum Committee duties around design and delivery of the Language Program as new approaches and programs came on stream. Her approach to teaching and dealing with students was amazing. Ever positive, she saw and brought out the best in her students. Whether one was a top honours student in Grade XII or a student struggling with the program in Grade VII - they were all the same to Eleanor and there are many of her former students who will credit her , in no small way, for the success they know today. Competence, compassion, good humour ,energy and hard work were her trademarks. But beyond her teaching, she was a tremendous school person. She readily bought into change and saw it as an opportunity rather than an impediment. I recall when Grade XII was introduced to NL. Eleanor was a key player in assuring that our school would offer a program that would match any in the province and, here, her brilliance in scheduling was seen. Once we knew what we wanted to do, she would ignore the limitations of software, get her big sheet of paper, pencil and eraser, and, with the skill of a champion chess player, the blocks got filled in and the program emerged with a place for every student. Our school had beginning teachers come on staff each year. Although well educated in their chosen subject areas , working in a school system and dealing with the many expectations and players in the school community can be daunting for the beginner. There are many accomplished educators in our schools, today, who will be quick to acknowledge that their success, in those early months, was helped , in no small way, by the gentle mentoring of "Mrs. Young". Her wit and pleasant personality gave her that personal edge in dealing with people at any level within the system.
After Fatima, Eleanor, literally, took on the world- teaching in the Canada's North, working in Alberta, and becoming a world traveler - visiting and seeing all of which she had read. And still there was time for family and and the unconditional love of Wayne, Brian and their children. She has left you all a legacy of which you can be so proud! As you celebrate her life and mourn her passing, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Your Mom - your sister- will not be forgotten as she rests in peace. And for her , a quote from one of her beloved poets " I am part of all that I have met" ( Tennyson)
God Bless.

Brian and all of Eleanor’s family,
I’m sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. I’m glad that I got to see her last week by the shop. Your mom was a gentle , highly intelligent, mentor, teacher, loving mom , wife and sister. She treated each and every student the same and worked to ensure that they got the help they needed. I have always told my colleagues, my friends and my children of the great teacher I had , who went above and beyond to help with my speeches and public speaking. I have always had the greatest respect for her. She spoke of coming to our house to help me when I saw her recently. Mom and Eleanor were great friends and colleagues over the years. Mom would be truly sad today if she were well.
Brian and Rhonda,
I know that you’ve been really good to Eleanor during her illness. Take comfort that she is now at peace with your dad and Wayne.
Fly high with the Angels, RIP

We are deeply saddened to learn of Eleanor's passing. She was a wonderful neighbor when we lived in Downey's Lane. With all her troubles, Eleanor always had a smile, a kind word, and the wisdom of old souls that she made relevant to every day. You would never say she had a care in the world if you didn't know her. Her compassion and kindness was woven into daily life. Her wit, accompanied by a grin or a chuckle, was beyond measure. To all her family, we send sincerest condolences. May she rest in eternal peace with those whom she loved fiercely and who have gone before her.

My heart is heavy today. The sad news of Eleanor’s passing conjures so many emotions and memories. For all of us that had the good fortune to have her as a teacher, we may not have know it at the time, but we were truly blessed. She was brilliant, she was kind, she was understanding. And oh so witty. Beyond the classroom, beyond the staff room, Eleanor and Mom were such good buddies - both of them laughing and praying their way through good times and far too many hardships. I am grateful for their friendship and sad that Mom is unable to articulate her own thoughts on losing such a great companion. To Brian and all who loved her, my condolences. Your Mom has indeed left the world a better place. Now it’s her time to rest. Sleep well gentle lady.

Yes, my thoughts are awash with things like catstick, slough, the landwash, the Wester' Cove, swimming in Branch River, smoking cigarettes when we were too young, going to the shows in the hall and enjoying the life of a child in outport Newfoundland.
