It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the beloved Eleanor Mary Young (nee Power). Eleanor passed peacefully at her home in St. Bride’s surrounded by her loving family and closest friends on June 30th, 2019.

Predeceased by her Husband Leonard, Son Wayne, Parents Alice and Allan, and Brothers Ozzie and Andy. Leaving to mourn Son Brian (Rhonda), Grandchildren Ashley (Ryan), Brandon (Danielle), Timika (Mike), Brody (Mother Sharon), and Violet (Mother Kristen). Siblings: Aggie, Eileen (Ignatius), Anne-Marie (Tony), Eric (Kimmy), Charmaine (Joe), Bertie (Kelly), Allie (Alfred), Sheila (Brian), Carmie (Leonard), and Brenda (Jimmy). As well as her many adoring Nieces, Nephews, cousins, past colleagues, students, neighbours and her unborn Grand-daughter whom she was so excited for. Also leaving with fond memories, her many close and caring friends especially Shane, Corey, and Ángel.

First, let us start by saying that writing this without the incredibly sharp writing skills of Eleanor herself has proved challenging. How do you properly do justice for a woman who could give Webster a run for its money?

Eleanor was born in Branch on May 28, 1945 and was the eldest child of Allan and Alice Power. She was a bright child from the beginning and always had a penchant for learning. Upon completion of high school she was the first member of her family to attend Memorial University in St. John’s where she pursued her passion for education. She excelled in her studies and exemplified extreme determination  and brilliance in her program. She went on to earn her teaching degree and become a Teacher at Fatima Academy for over 30 years. Teaching was her passion as many of her past students would likely tell you.  She was a patient Teacher who cared deeply for all her students and their learning.

Eleanor met Leonard at a young age and quickly fell head over heels. They later married  and had 2 sons, Wayne and Brian. Though their life together was not without its challenges, their marriage held strong and Eleanor continued to be a devoted Wife and Mother. She was committed to her family through thick and thin and everything in between, forever going above and beyond for all of whom she loved and cared for. In addition to her devotion to her family, Eleanor was extremely devoted to her faith. Through the many hardships she had endured in her 74 years, she remained a loyal servant of God and sought his guidance in the darkest of times.

After what many would consider too many hardships for one person to endure, Eleanor persevered and continued to seek new adventure and opportunities. After many years of working she decided to take some time and travel the world with close friends. During this time she made a habit of checking many items off her bucket list such as visiting Europe, Las Vegas, Israel and enjoying many of life’s finest arts.

The family would like to thank the staff at the cancer clinic, placentia hospital and the health science for the exemplary care and company they administered during all of her visits. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Armstrong, Dr. Power and RN Vivian Careen for showing her so much compassion and kindness during this journey. A special thank you to everyone who took the time to care for her around the clock, visited, delivered meals and took her to appointments.

There are no words to describe how greatly Eleanor will be missed, her presence was warm, her stories were memorable and she always had a quick remark to make when the situation required. She was brilliant, caring, hard working, loving and above all strong, a trait she passed on to many women in her life. She will be forever in our hearts and in our memories.
