Obituary of Fred Tobin

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Fred Tobin at the Caribou Veteran’s Pavilion in St. John’s on Saturday, May 20th, 2023, aged 80 years. Predeceased by his parents Frederick and Rita (Wakeham), his brother Desmond, sisters-in-law Dallas, Paula and Helen; brother in law Harold Whittle. Leaving to mourn his wife of 59 years and the love of his life, Anna (nee Whittle); son Kurt (Tammy) and grandchildren Abigail and Warren; sisters - Marina, Mary, Rose (Billy), Bernice (Joe); brothers – Gerald, Edward (Mary), John, Arch. Sisters and Brothers In-Law Leona (Peter), Alice, Beatrice (Gerry), Mary, Julien (Barb), Alphonsus (Myra), Frank (Marg), Chris (Norma), Peter (Mary), Joan, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends. Fred was a well-respected member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 20 years and served several postings in Canada, Germany and around the world. Fred and Anna met at a restaurant in Placentia where Anna worked. He told her he came for the free ice cream. It was not long before they became husband and wife. Their life together was filled with love, commitment and fun times. Fred and Anna were blessed with many opportunities to travel the world and enjoyed each experience that this provided. Their son Kurt was and is their “pride and joy”. Fred was quite the gentleman who was dedicated to his family. He was a straight shooter who was genuine and sincere. Fred had a way of making those he spent time with feel quite special. He was interested in his family and friends and, after spending time with Fred; you left with a smile on your face. He loved life, was quick witted and had a very contagious laugh. Remembering his laugh will help us all laugh as we celebrate a man who will be remembered for the kindness and joy he brought to everyone who knew him. One of his light-hearted jokes when he talked about end of life was “How will I rise up on the last day if I’m cremated?” Rise up Fred and soar with the angels. You are now at peace. You have touched so many lives; brought many much joy and will be forever remembered. Special thanks to the staff at the Caribou Veteran’s Pavilion, family, and friends for all the support over the course of Fred’s illness. In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society, of Newfoundland and Labrador or a charity of one’s choice.
