Dear Mrs English & family, we are so sorry to hear of Gerald’s passing. As mentioned in your tribute to him, he was loved as a bus driver! He went above and beyond to accommodate students when we were late at our bus stops. He served Fox Harbour for many years and I can guarantee you that he was loved and respected by all. He had a great way with young people and knew how to handle us!! RIP Gerald until we meet again!

Mae, Bill, Allan, Gere and Alice, I was so sorry to hear about your Gerald's passing. He certainly put up quite a fight! But then again, I think we would have been surprised if it had been any different! He always made me feel loved, before, during and even after my time as a member of your family. He has a very special place in my heart and I will miss him dearly. I hope you find comfort in one another and in knowing that he is at peace with God.

Mae and family. Sorry to hear of Gerald's passing. He was bus driver when my boys started school. Before my youngest started, Gerald would always tease him saying, "get your book bag ready and come on. I'll wait for ya." When I worked on the clean-up for council I had many chats with him about his garden. May he rest in peace.

To the English family my heartfelt condolences on the passing of a wonderful man. He was our beloved bus driver ( 1977 to 1979approximately ) on the Fox Harbour route. That in itself will gain him automatic access into heaven without St. Peter even asking . He was such a good man with his quick witty sayings but yet so supportive and established such a positive rapport with such a diverse group of youth. Hold tight your memories of a great man who definitely left his mark on this world.

I was so saddened today to hear the news of Geralds passing. As I reflect back l can recall so many vivid fond memories of spending time with Gerald and the whole family. Whether on trips to Branch where he would take time to head up the river for a flick or hanging around while he worked on the buses in August after which we would go for a drive to Southeast to get a Pepsi (and a pack of Export A), he was alway a joy to be around.
Gerald always seemed larger than life to me. I still find myself using some of his more colourful phrases to this day. He was definately a character but his kind nature was always forefront. I was always welcomed at his house and made to feel like family by him and Mae.
Regretfully I will not be back in Newfoundland in time to celebrate Gerald's life with you. Mae, I hope that you, Allan, Bill, Alice, Geraldine and your whole family find comfort in each other and in the many fond memories that I know each of us have of Gerald. We are thinking of you and hope to see you soon.

Mae, Billy, Allan and families,
Donna and I want to extend our sincerest condolences on Gerald's passing.
As I read through the condolence messages, I'm struck by the many lives he lived: bus driver, mechanic, backyard gardener, neighbour, etc. Those who left messages knew him from many different perspectives. My strongest memories are from my early teenage years. Billy and I hung out a lot together in those days in Branch. Your family would arrive every Friday evening so that Gerald could spend the weekend tending his gardens in the gulch, looking after his sheep, cutting hay, fencing meadows, hauling manure and caplin, and on it goes, from daylight to dark. He was a hardworking man, a man's man.
I hope that the kind words and fond memories of the many, many people who shared Gerald's path on his life's journey give you some comfort at this time. As was written in the obituary, he was certainly a larger than life character.
God's love to all of you,
Basil and Madonna English

My condolences to the English Family on the passing of your husband, dad, and grandfather.
I have many fond memories of my 8 years with Mr. English as my bus driver. When I was in grade one I was very shy and he recognized this. One morning I accidentally sat in a seat that had a 'special guest designation'. The person assigned to the seat was going to get on the bus at the next stop. Mr. English caught sight of my scared face and stopped the bus in the middle of the road and moved me up to the front seat. I cannot express how relieved I was (the fact that I can remember it 38 years later, says a lot).
Years later, I was a bus monitor so I would go all the way to the head of Southeast in the mornings and in the evenings. Myself and Mr. English would have some grand chats about what was going on in the world. He always had a report for me on what was on VOCM during the day. I recall how he told me about the spaceship Challenger exploding. I also remember with a smile, one time when he told me how he had been in the woods that morning and had been chased up a tree by a moose (it was a pretty exciting story but I wasn't sure if it was entirely true or not).
He was kind and funny, gruff and firm, and he has a wonderful place in my memories of childhood.

Mae, Geraldine, Alice, Billy and Allan we are sending our sincere condolences on Gerald's passing. So many memories of Gerald over the many summers I spent in Branch. It was never a problem to have him dig me a can full of worms to use in the gully. One of the most funny stories I can share is the time Gerald and Dad were replacing the fence in the gulch. While they were working well up in the gulch Gerald asked me to go get him Stake. I was very young at the time and I actually walked down the gully across the flats went back to the house and asked Peg for a Steak for Gerald. It was at that time Peg told me the difference between a Stake and Steak! Needless to say I returned with a couple Pepsi's, snowballs and chips.
I hope you can hold on to all your memories and comfort each other during this period of grieving.
